2021 Immigration Reform Campaign at the Borderland

On December 5th, 2020, the Border Network for Human Rights (BNHR) and other allied organizations will lead a caravan to launch the 2021 Immigration Reform Campaign at the Borderland to demand that Congress and the Biden administration pass legislation to create a pathway to citizenship for millions of immigrants living in the United States, and put an end to the cruel and unjust policies harming families across our nation and at our borders.

The nearly 30-mile, 100-car caravan will bring attention to the egregious human rights violations against immigrants and border communities by local law enforcement and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agencies – including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) – and call for immediate action for elected officials to pass compassionate immigration reform. The caravan will depart from Anthony, New Mexico and make multiple stops along the route:

  • STOP #1
    • ETA: 10:30 a.m. MT
    • Location: Border wall near Sunland Park, NM 
    • Event Details: BNHR and partner organizations will call for the demilitarization and halt further construction of the border wall, as well as accountability from DHS agencies.
  • STOP #2
    • ETA: 11:30 a.m. MT 
    • Location: Santa Fe Street and Calleros Court in downtown El Paso, TX
    • Event Details: Press conference hosted by BNHR to formally request that U.S. Representative Verónica Escobar and other local elected officials support inclusive and humane immigration reform, including a moratorium on deportations and a pathway to lawful status.
  • STOP #3
    • ETA: 12:30 p.m. MT
    • Location: Bowie High School, El Paso, TX
    • Event Details: Local immigrant families will share the real-life impacts of the cruel immigration policies and practices that have led to family separation and other socioeconomic issues in the area.

This is the first event in an upcoming series as part of its 2021 Immigration Reform Campaign at the Borderland, which outlines the organization’s priorities for in the new year regarding human rights and immigrant justice, including: 

  • The introduction of a fair, inclusive and humane immigration reform package in Congress within the Biden administration’s first 100 days
  • A commitment using Executive powers to repeal the destructive immigration policies targeting immigrant families and children in the border region implemented under the Trump administration 
  • The passage of immigration reform that includes a pathway to citizenship for nearly 12 million undocumented residents in the U.S., including Dreamers, DACA recipients, and TPS holders
  • The demilitarization of the southern border and the dismantlement of the border wall of hate
  • Accountability from local and federal law enforcement, including DHS agencies, for human rights violations, specifically occurring at the U.S./Mexico border 
  • The closure of immigration detention facilities across the country
  • The reunification of families who were separated due to cruel and unjust immigration policies
