Border Community Gathers to Welcome Congressmen Pearce (NM-2, R) and O’Rourke (TX-16, D) Border Accountability Bill

Simultaneous Press Conferences will be held at Congressmen’ District Offices on March 26th to recognize Historic and Unprecedented Effort to Bring Quality, Oversight and Accountability to Border Enforcement.

El Paso, TX/Southern New Mexico. In the midst of a national discussion over the actions and strategies of US border agencies and programs, early next week Congressmen Steve Pearce (NM-2 R) and Beto O’Rourke (TX-16 D) will be introducing the Border Accountability and Community Engagement bill. This legislation represents an unprecedented bi-partisan effort to create and enhance border oversight mechanisms for the action and strategies of federal law enforcement agencies working on border enforcement.

Additionally, the Pearce-O’Rourke proposal addresses the issues of border agents’ civil and human rights training, the protocols and guidelines of the use of lethal force at the border, the creation of a DHS Ombudsman to promote institutional best practices, and important steps to prevent the dramatic situation of migrant deaths at the US/Mexico border.

A multi-sectorial border delegation organized by the Border Network for Human Rights (BNHR) will be traveling to Washington D.C. and joining Congressman Pearce and Congressman O’Rourke at a Press Conference on March 26th at Capitol Hill. (National Press Advisory attached).

On the same day, in our border region of El Paso/Southern New Mexico, border community members will gather at both Congressmen’ offices to recognize their leadership and to welcome this historic piece of legislation that, if it becomes part of our laws, it will bring quality and accountability to our border enforcement and create the necessary conditions to respect and promote civil and human rights of border residents.
